The American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Editorial Panel announced 13 add-on codes for digital pathology that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2023.

The new Category III CPT codes for digital pathology are associated with 13 of the most frequently charged pathology procedures, including CPT 88305 (Level IV-Tissue Exam). These codes will be used to document the additional clinical staff time and service needs connected to digitizing glass slides for primary diagnosis. The AMA CPT will add a new heading to the Category III section and guidelines to define digital pathology digitization procedures, according to the College of American Pathologists (CAP), which was involved in advocating for inclusion of the new digital pathology codes in 2023.

CAP says it will provide resources throughout 2022 to inform members about anticipated CPT changes. “The new codes will help pathologists, pathology practices, and laboratories providing digital pathology digitization procedures appropriately report these services,” CAP said in a recent advocacy update.

The 13 new digital pathology Category III add-on codes are listed on the AMA website.
